DOING ALRIGHT V1 I made a little bit of money I fell and I stayed in love I got some good friends I can sometimes count on When times get tough But I got vices in my closet And foes waiting at my door I got secrets I could have done time for CHORUS 1 I don't listen to the girl on the movie screen; she's lying And the man with a band behind him's probably high I don't trust my souls to somebody else's convictions I may be wrong But I'm doing alright V2 I've known some better men Tried to take after them But in the end It still looks a lot like me So I stopped stealing words From other people's stories Starting learning All the songs in my head CHORUS 1 CHORUS 2 I don't listen to the girl on the movie screen; she's lying And the man with a guitar in his hand is probably high I don't trust my souls to somebody else's convictions I may be wrong But I'm doing alright
2.
My Love 03:22
MY LOVE V1 Oh love You held me tonight Though you cheated And told me more lies V2 I know That I can't change your mind But your heart It's just a matter of time CHORUS I've never been interested in Your words they have never been enough Oh but someday Your heart will break And that's when you'll find my Love V3 Oh jealousy Burns deep in me I'd fight If it would do any good V4 But until you want Me more than her Every punch Would be thrown in vain
3.
Page That Never Turned V1 Bruised and battered I've been a long time gone Everybody I once knew mostly leaves me alone Sins of my father have become my own Now it's more than I can hold CHORUS The hardest lesson that I have ever learned Is waiting a lifetime for a page that never turned Then looking for grace in the ashes of every bridge I've burned to the ground V2 Drawn lines in the sand begged and pleaded with myself But took the hard road around every little bit of help Now the only one who can make a difference is the only one left Anymore BRIDGE Don't know why the ways I am Always keep me on the outside looking in The ways of the world I never got a foot in the door CHORUS
4.
Version of Love V1 Were you counting on Me giving up Just because  You self destruct Well I ain't that kind of girl and this ain't that kind of love V2 Anyway we got mouths to feed We got kids to dress I ain't got time to leave So I'm here diggin in I guess what I'm sayin is I've got nowhere else to be
C1 But I thought there'd be some more roses For all the crying I've done But I guess that don't come with this version of love One of the many lessons I've learned V3 Well I don't wanna get used to this Settling for something less But there's a time to be right  And I don't think this is it So I just pick your dirty clothes up off the floor C2 Used to think love was like climbing a mountain But it sure feels like pushing on a stone I bet for a few it's a road with a view   But that's not our version of love V3 So we're not a perfect match I always figured that And despite the odds We've made it this far But I'll always know your every flaw ‘cause I ain't going nowhere C1 But I thought there'd be some more roses For all the crying I've done But I guess that don't come with this version of love One of the many lessons I've learned C2 Used to think love was like climbing a mountain But it sure feels like pushing on a stone I bet for a few it's a road with a view   But that's not our version of love

Loving Her 02:52
LOVING HER V1 Its a feeling I get Every now and then Like a rushing water On a dry riverbed V2 It's a stirring of heart It's a waking of sorts To know the love I got Is worth every little bit of hell it costs CHORUS But sometimes I need a reminder Sometimes a small miracle But the years that have passed have shown I'm getting better at loving her V3 She might have given up More than a few hopes Gone and made her peace With the ways that I'm so difficult V4 But it's a give-and- a take From the vow to the grave Well at least I can say I'm not making all the same mistakes CHORUS BRIDGE I don't want to get tired of Rediscovering our love God knows that a life is a long time Without a some help to hold on CHORUS V1 Its a feeling I get Every now and then Like a rushing water On a dry riverbed
6.
KITCHEN FLOOR V1 There’s an old familiar song on the radio One that only you and I would still love And a couple kids upstairs screaming about the clothes they’re wearing And a stack of dishes piled up on the stove Chorus But don’t you think it feels like the right time to drop our cares and get real close? Because we ain’t had a moment to ourselves in 6 years Honey Now there’s no place like the kitchen floor V2 So forget about the fight we had just last night Or the lingering feelings when you woke up Because we could sit and talk about it for another hour But I think that I am finally out of words Chorus Well don’t you think it feels like the right time to drop our cares and get real close? Because we ain’t had a moment to ourselves in 6 years honey Now there’s no place like the kitchen floor BRIDGE Well we’ve never been too good at dancing But that don’t matter much right now Chorus Well don’t you think it feels like the right time to drop our cares and get real close? Because we ain’t had a moment to ourselves in 6 years honey Now there’s no place like the kitchen floor
7.
Lonesome 03:09
LONESOME V1 I kiss you on the cheek every night But it only takes 3 weeks to get a habit right Now 10 years in I'm not sure what to call it Oh you don't have to be alone To feel lonesome CHORUS I ain't asking For romance Like we once had When we were young But I never thought Being with someone Could ever seem as lonesome as this V2 Somewhere between the kids and the work A couple things I say just might be heard But I know to turn it off before your shows Oh you don't have to be alone To be lonesome
8.
Happy Ending 03:33
HAPPY ENDING V1 I’m gonna look on the bright side of life I’m gonna kill my enemies with kindness I’m gonna give hope a little more of a try Yeah, I’m gonna look on the bright side of life CHORUS I’ve was waiting on the storm to change direction But it never did I’ve been stranded in a sea of my regret Brewed at the hands of my fears Now I don’t know where it is I’ll go But I’m gonna set my sail while the wind is blowing V2 I won’t worry ‘bout what I can’t change I’m gonna give myself a little more grace Ain’t gonna want for things that I can’t have anyway No I’m gonna make myself some better days CHORUS BRIDGE I’ve got my lines down Time to play it out It ain’t easy working on a happy ending CHORUS
9.
LIGHT LEFT ON V1 The rain is setting in I'm setting out on some midwestern highway Even the mighty Mississippi don't inspire me that much anymore I'm counting exit signs down to the next line I'll be crossing Never lost but I don't always know why it is I'm going CHORUS There's still daylight hiding in my rearview mirror Fading reflections of the last town I've been Home is a hotel room Friends are late night bartenders 'til I see the light left on at the end of the road again V2 They're burning up the fields with the hope that the will yield a better year And I'm wearing myself down just hoping that I will find out the same thing Waiting on a change in the season to arrange our fortunes But still putting in our time at the mercy of some higher scheme
10.
ASHES & DUST V1 Ashes and dust and painful memories What choice have I now but to trust what I barely believe Cause the Giver has taken away And He don’t ask you what you’d have to say Now my faith runs as thin as the dying leaves on a grave V2 Now everyone is gone and I’m left to my sorrow and my grief And the bottle I turn to don’t last long enough to bring any relief Oh how I wish that you could’ve stayed How many nights did I fall down and pray But sometimes that just ain’t enough to bring any change CHORUS And time will move slowly on Farther from when you were here in my arms So if time has a way of forgetting then I’d rather not move on MUSICAL BRIDGE BRIDGE God I miss you so bad Wish I could hold you one last time God I’m feeling so hollow Like I’m missing everything inside of me From my head to my feet and my heart and my soul CHORUS
11.
Most Of It 03:06
MOST OF IT V1 Well I don’t ever know where my money’s coming from And every year is different than the one I had before But I like to think I’m getting good at getting by V2 I ain’t got much to show for chasing all these dreams And the more I run the less it seems I’ll ever take the lead But you learn some lessons When you’re running behind CHORUS Like, the right road can run in both directions And money sometimes buys you happiness Even God ain’t here to answer all your questions And this life will make you Better make the most of it V3 Now if given half a chance I’ll give it everything ‘Cause hard work and failures are the only guarantees That I’ll end up with Anything worth holding on to V4 And heartache it don’t get any easier to take But I’ve learned to check the wreckage for signs that show the way To the next chance The next dance The next song The next love Along the way CHORUS

about

On his latest release, “Not All Roses,” singer-songwriter Corey Nolen enlists the help of vocalist Ashley Spurling as he tells honest, real-life stories of heartbreak, commitment, despair and hope. The harmony-driven duet trades thought-provoking lyrics that ride on melodies that bear witness to Nolen’s southern upbringing, but the music has enough pop/rock sensibilities to keep the listener from fully nailing down its musical genre.

The album was primarily recorded live in the studio. Corey enlisted the help of producer Brad Lyons (Matthew Mayfield) as well as a large cast of Birmingham and Nashville musicians including Clint Wells (Bob Schneider, Griffin House), and Jesse Suttle (Alabama Blues Hall of Fame). Together they were able to accomplish the goal of capturing the energy and dynamics of vocalists and musicians playing off of each other in the moment in order to create this unique and emotive full length album.

“Not All Roses” is the fifth recording released by Corey Nolen in the past five years. Though he is not a typical touring artist, Corey is a prolific writer and consistently brings new music to the stage and studio. He is best known for his songwriting, which draws from his keen attention to the details of life and his ability to capture truths shared by almost all of his listeners. In the winter of 2017 Corey was named a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and in the spring of 2015 he was awarded first place in the statewide, “Make Music Alabama” songwriting competition. With this album, Corey Nolen further establishes himself as a compelling storyteller with a knack for bringing those stories to life by engaging skillful musicians who help him communicate his stories through well-produced, honest songs.
